WEB's Fellow Travelers: McCarthy's Man Comes to Cannes

Brill Takes on Cohn in New Film

Chris Bauer and Roy Cohn Take Center Stage

As the new film The Apprentice premieres at the Cannes Film Festival, we take a look at the cultural afterlife of WEB's Fellow Travelers characters, Senator Joseph McCarthy (Chris Bauer) and his closeted chief counsel, Roy Cohn (Will Brill). Brill, who previously played Noah Weissman on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, will recur as Cohn in the film, which explores the ruthless tactics of McCarthy's Senate Committee.

Cohn, a controversial figure in American history, was instrumental in McCarthy's anti-communist crusade. As McCarthy's chief legal counsel, Cohn helped to orchestrate the infamous Army-McCarthy hearings, which targeted alleged communists within the U.S. government. Cohn's ruthless tactics and homophobic behavior made him a polarizing figure, and he was eventually disbarred from practicing law.

Brill's portrayal of Cohn in The Apprentice promises to be a nuanced and complex performance. The actor has a knack for playing characters who are both charismatic and deeply flawed, and he is sure to bring Cohn's conflicted nature to life. Bauer, who is also known for his work on The Wire and True Blood, is equally adept at playing complex and morally ambiguous characters.
